The RTI Story

Refrigerated Transport, Inc. was first led to success by Cy Weller, an attorney from San Antonio.  After starting another successful refrigerated trucking company, Frozen Food Express, Cy Weller along with 2 other partners, William Wise and Tom Miller, established Refrigerated Transport, Inc. in 1947.

After Cy’s younger brother Mack served in the Army in WWII, Cy brought Mack Weller into RTI as President.  RTI started with just 2 trucks with trailers and 1 bob tail truck, hauling Borden premade biscuits around Texas.

Mack Weller met KL Breeden while KL was a student at Southern Methodist University and hired him as RTI’s first salesman.  KL Breeden purchased RTI from Cy Weller in 1976.

RTI’s success in the 1980’s was due to the addition of KL’s two sons, Wynne and David, who brought in new business and expanded the company.

In 2000, the Breeden Family needed to sell RTI’s Truckload & LTL divisions in order to bring investors into their expanding business.  During a Trucking Association conference that summer, KL met with longtime friend and competitor Sam Bishop, who had just sold Zero Motor Freight in San Antonio, and offered the Bishop family the purchase of RTI. In August 2000 the Bishop family began operating RTI.
